Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness that interferes with a person’s ability to think clearly, manage emotions, make decisions and relate to others. It is a complex, long-term medical illness.Schizophrenia may have difficulty distinguishing between what is real and what is imaginary; and may have difficulty expressing normal emotions in social situations. It is possible to live well with schizophrenia.

Behaviors that are early warning signs of schizophrenia include

  • A constant feeling of being watched
  • Hearing or seeing something that isn’t there
  • Strange body positioning
  • Peculiar or nonsensical way of speaking or writing
  • Feeling indifferent to very important situations
  • A change in personal hygiene and appearance

Symptoms of schizophrenia mental disorder

In teens, it can be difficult to diagnose schizophrenia. This is because the first signs can include  a drop in grades, change of friends, sleep problems, and irritability common and nonspecific adolescent behavior.

Positive symptoms of schizophrenia mental disorder

  • Hallucinations: Seeing, feeling, tasting, hearing or smelling something that doesn’t really exist.Voices may involve people that are known or unknown to the person hearing them.
  • Delusions: These are false beliefs. False ideas individuals may believe that someone is spying on him or her.
  • Disordered thinking and speech: The person may jump from one topic to another for no logical reason,in a nonsensical fashion.
  • Cognitive issues/disorganized thinking: The cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia often struggle to remember things, organize their thoughts or complete tasks.
  • Social withdrawal: They believe somebody is going to harm them.

Negative symptoms of schizophrenia mental disorder

Negative symptoms often include being emotionally flat or speaking in a dull, disconnected way. For example, absence of facial expressions or lack of motivation.

What are the causes of schizophrenia mental disorder ?

The cause of schizophrenia is still unclear. Evidence suggests that genetic and environmental factors act together to bring about schizophrenia.

Research suggests below points have several possible causes

  • Genetic inheritance: If there is no history of schizophrenia in a family, the chances of developing it are less than 1 percent. However, that risk rises to 10 – 13  percent if a parent was diagnosed. The highest risk occurs when an identical twin is diagnosed with schizophrenia. The unaffected twin has a roughly 50% chance of developing the disorder.
  • Brain chemistry: Problems with certain brain chemicals, experts believe that an imbalance of dopamine(Dopamine is an organic chemical of the catecholamine and phenethylamine families that plays several important roles in the brain and body. ), a neurotransmitter(Neurotransmitters allow brain cells to communicate with each other), is involved in the onset of schizophrenia. Networks of neurons are likely involved as well.
  • Environmental factors: There is no definite proof, many suspect trauma before birth and viral infections may contribute to the development of the disease. Babies whose mothers get the flu while they are pregnant are at higher risk of developing schizophrenia later in life. People who are hospitalized for severe infections are also at higher risk.
  • Substance use: Some studies have suggested that taking mind altering drugs during teen years and young adulthood can increase the risk of schizophrenia. Another study has found that smoking marijuana led to earlier onset of schizophrenia and often preceded the manifestation of the illness.


There is no cure for schizophrenia, but it can be treated and managed in several ways.Many patients do well with minimal symptoms or periods of recovery.Drug treatment can reduce symptoms and greatly reduce future relapses.

Facial palsy also called idiopathic or bell’s palsy. The term facial palsy or bell’s palsy generally refers to weakness of the facial muscles or we can say sudden weakness in the muscles on one half of the face.When a facial nerve is either non-functioning or missing,  a condition in which the muscles on one side of your face become weak or paralyzed. It affects only one side of the face at a time.

Facial nerves working principle

In our face, each side has its own facial nerve,so damaging the right side facial nerve will only affect the right side of the face, and vice versa.In our human body each nerve starts at the brain and enters the face to the front of the ear where it then divides into five separate branches.These branches supply the muscles which are essential for facial expression. Saliva production , tears and taste are also controlled by the facial nerve in different manner.

Symptoms of facial palsy

  • Facial palsy normally affects only one side of the face although in some or rare cases it may affect both sides. It does not cause weakness in your arms or legs. If you experience weakness in your arms or legs as well as weakness on one side of your face, you should seek immediate medical attention. These symptoms grouped together may indicate a stroke.
  • Loss of sensation may mean you cannot feel your face when you touch it.
  • The exact reason why this happens is not clear yet.
  • A decrease in your ability to taste.
  • Headache.

Causes of facial palsy

When we talked about facial palsy, there are actually many different causes , and treatment and prognosis vary greatly depending on the cause. If we talked about researchers, they believed that viral infections may also play a role in the development of facial palsy or bell’s palsy. They’ve found evidence that suggests the herpes simplex 1 virus (a common cause of cold sores) may be responsible for a large number of cases. Some of other major causes of facial palsy are listed below.

  • Surgical causes for example during removal of acoustic neuroma or facial nerve tumour, or when operating on the parotid gland.
  • Bacterial causes such as Lyme disease or following a middle ear infection.
  • Neurological conditions such as Neurofibromatosis 2, or Guillain-Barré syndrome.
  • Traumatic injury such as fractures to the brain, skull or face.
  • Birth trauma for example caused by forceps or facial presentation delivery.
  • Congenital conditions such as an abnormal development of the facial nerve or muscle in the womb.
  • Rare genetic syndromes such as Moebius syndrome or CHARGE syndrome.
  • Stroke although a stroke can cause facial palsy it is slightly different in that the problems are not caused by direct damage to the facial nerve. The paralysis in this case is caused by brain damage and the messages not being transferred properly to the facial nerve.

Facial nerve injuries

Facial nerve injury classified into three categories.

  1. First degree injury – When the facial nerve is just concussed or bruised and recovers within eight weeks.
  2. Second degree injury – Where the facial nerve is more severely damaged but still retains its outer layer. The nerve begins to show the first signs of recovery at about four months as it slowly repairs itself at the rate of around one millimeter per day.
  3. Third degree injury – When the facial nerve is more severely damaged, any recovery is much slower and always incomplete. Sometimes the nerve is completely severed and surgical repair is needed to restore facial function.

Diagnosis & Treatment

There’s no specific test for facial Palsy or bell’s palsy. Your doctor will look at your face and ask you to move your facial muscles by lifting your brow,closing your eyes, showing your teeth and frowning, among other movements.

Other conditions such as a stroke, infections, Lyme disease and tumors  can also cause facial muscle weakness, mimicking Bell’s palsy. If it’s not clear why you’re having the symptoms you are, your doctor may recommend other tests, including

  • Electromyography (EMG) -This test can confirm the presence of nerve damage and determine its severity. An EMG measures the electrical activity of a muscle in response to stimulation and the nature and speed of the conduction of electrical impulses along a nerve.
  • Imaging scans – Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computerized tomography (CT) may be needed on occasion to rule out other possible sources of pressure on the facial nerve, such as a tumor or skull fracture.

Most people with facial palsy recover fully with or without treatment. There’s no one size fits all treatment for facial palsy or bell’s palsy, but your doctor may suggest medications or physical therapy to help speed your recovery. Surgery is rarely an option for facial or bell’s palsy.


Commonly used medications to treat facial Palsy or bell’s palsy.

  • Corticosteroids – Such as prednisone, are powerful anti-inflammatory agents. If they can reduce the swelling of the facial nerve, it will fit more comfortably within the bony corridor that surrounds it. Corticosteroids may work best if they’re started within several days of when your symptoms started.
  • Antiviral drugs – The role of antivirals remains unsettled. Antivirals alone have shown no benefit compared with placebo. Antivirals added to steroids are also unlikely to be beneficial.However, despite this, valacyclovir (Valtrex) is sometimes given in combination with prednisone in people with severe facial palsy.

Alternative medicine

Although there’s little scientific evidence to support the use of alternative medicine for people with facial  or bell’s palsy, some people with the condition may benefit from the following.

  • Relaxation techniques Relaxing by using techniques such as meditation and yoga may relieve muscle tension and chronic pain.
  • Acupuncture – Placing thin needles into a specific point in your skin helps stimulate nerves and muscles, which may offer some relief.
  • Biofeedback training – By teaching you to use your thoughts to control your body, you may help gain better control over your facial muscles.
  • Vitamin therapy – Vitamins B-12, B-6 and zinc may help nerve growth.

Where many people believe that changing the DNA of a animal or plant has a significant effect on a person’s chances of developing cancer. where some studies and researchers are against on that.A professor Dr. Kevin Folta  and chairman of the Horticultural Sciences Department at the University of Florida, Gainesville, who replied that “the short answer is no, there is absolutely zero reputable evidence that GMO foods cause cancer.”Cancer is a multiple group of diseases with many possible causes, but GMOs are not one of them. In fact, future GMO plants will play a role in prevention through traits engineered to produce nutrients that help fight cancer or drive out naturally occurring compounds that increase cancer risk.

5 Genetically Modified Foods You Should Avoid

1) GMOs Corn

Corn is nowadays common food when we talked about GMOs. Some studies say Genetically engineered corn contains the highly toxic gene Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis), which Monsanto introduced in the 1990s to make plants immune to Roundup, which is insect killer.

2) GMOs Soybeans

In US around 75 – 80 percent soybeans are genetically modified. Genetically engineered soy, including allergies, sterility, birth defects, and offspring death rates up to five times higher than normal, according to Dr. Joseph Mercola in the Huffington Post.

3) GMOs Sugar Beets

A sugar beet is genetically modified sugar beet  that has been genetically engineered by the direct manipulation of its genome using biotechnology. Now the hazards of an already toxic substance are exacerbated, presenting the likelihood of increased cancer rates.

Any product you buy that says “sugar” or “sucrose” may contain GMO beet sugar unless it is certified organic or labeled as 100% cane sugar.

“Sugar is not just an empty calorie, its effect on us is much more insidious. It has nothing to do with the calories. It’s a poison by itself,” Lustig says.

4) GMOs Aspartame

 Aspartame (APM) is an artificial substitute is made from genetically modified  and is used in basically every diet soda and product on the market. Natural News reported in one study, of the 48 rats given aspartame, up to 67 percent of all female rats developed tumors roughly the size of golf balls or larger.

1) Avoid Microwave Popcorn

A bag of popcorn in the microwave when you want a quick and tasty snack, but is it really worth risking yourself for liver, testicular and pancreatic cancer.”Microwave popcorn is loaded with artificial butter, and the fumes from it contain the toxic compound diacytel that is associated with lung cancers,” says professor Eitan Yefenof, PhD, chairman of the Lautenberg Center for Immunology and Cancer Research at Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel.

2) Say no to smoking, tobacco and alcohol

The research linking alcohol to cancer risk is strong.Alcohol  is  second leading cause of cancer, right behind tobacco use. While a moderate or low consumption of alcohol can be healthy and lead to a reduced risk of heart disease, excessive drinking is known to cause heart failure, stroke, and sudden death. Excessive alcohol use is the biggest cause of mouth, esophagus, liver, colon, mouth, rectum and breast cancers.Clear patterns have emerged between alcohol consumption and the development of head and neck cancer, esophageal cancer, liver cancer, breast, and colon cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute.

3) Avoid Canned Foods

Most cans are lined with a product called bisphenol-A (BPA), which has been shown to genetically alter the brain cells of rats. Leading UK cancer charity has written to major food manufacturers asking them to reveal details of their use of the controversial chemical BPA in food cans. The move follows a US study showing BPA is still widely used in cans despite being linked to a range of potentially serious health problems.There is a lot of evidence that BPA can have an affect on the human body even at very low levels.Many plastic goods, thermal paper, water lines, and many dental composites also contain BPA.

4) Avoid Grilled Red Meat

Yes, i know grilled food can taste delicious but preparing meats in this manner, releases a carcinogen called heterocyclic aromatic amines. the IARC review found that the strongest evidence linked processed meats (such as hot dogs, beef jerky, bacon and ham) to colorectal cancer with each hot dog size serving of processed meat eaten daily raising the risk by 18 percent over a lifetime.

5) Avoid Refined Sugar

Cancer cells love refined sugars, which hikes insulin levels and and promote cancer growth. High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is considered the worst offender and it’s found in any sweet you can think of. It’s been known for a long time that cancer cells feed off of sugar, so with so many people addicted to sugary treats, it’s no wonder why cancer rates have skyrocketed.

Cutting out sugar doesn’t help treat cancer, and sugar doesn’t directly cause cancer. Why then do we encourage people to cut down on sugary foods in our diet advice?

That’s because there is an indirect link between cancer risk and sugar. Eating lots of sugar over time can cause you to gain weight, and robust scientific evidence shows that being overweight or obese increases the risk of 13 different types of cancer.

6) Avoid Farmed Fish

PCBs are cancer-causing chemicals that may exist in farm-raised salmon at a concentration 16 times higher than wild salmon, and the level of dioxin is also higher, by a factor of 11 fold.

  • Commercial fish farming involves raising an incredible number of fish (such as salmon), in a crowded environment. Farm raised fish may have as much as 20% less protein compared to wild fish.
  •  A farming operation where they are treated with antibiotics, pesticides, and other carcinogenic chemicals to try and control the bacterial, viral, and parasitic outbreaks that result from cramming so many fish in a small space. Farmed fish also don’t have as much omega-3 as wild salmon.

7) The Silent Killer – Hydrogenated oils

Hydrogenated oils, also known as trans fats.Hydrogenated oils are vegetable oils which cannot be naturally extracted like olive oil, soy or canola oil.whose chemical structure has been altered to prevent rancidity in foods, which increases shelf life and saves money for food manufacturers. They’re packed with unhealthy omega-6 fats and have been proven to alter the structure of our cell membranes. Never cook with hydrogenated oils and check your labels for healthy oils like olive, soy and canola instead.

8) Soft drinks has zero nutritional benefit

Soft drinks, soda, etc., no matter what you call it, it’s still detrimental to your health. Soda is packed full of calories, sugar and artificial ingredients, and has ZERO nutritional benefit.Studies have shown that only drinking two sodas per week nearly doubles the risk of pancreatic cancer. There are plenty of alternatives out there, so next time you’re craving something sweet, think about what you’re putting into your body. Your health is an investment, never forget that.

9) Salty,pickled and smoked foods causes cancer

They may be delicious but too much salt has been linked to high blood pressure,( it has not been directly linked to cancer). As an alternative, eat cucumbers.If you eat 12g of salt a day, it can double the likely hood of stomach cancer. The recommended amount for an adult is just 6g a day.

  • Many salty, pickled and smoked foods are processed with the preservative nitrate, which changes in our bodies to N-nitroso composites, which are associate with high cancer-developing risks.
  • Smoked foods like meat or nuts absorb the smoke, which contains the same tar found in cigarettes.

10) Processed white flour

When flour is refined, all nutritional value is removed. Then it’s bleached with chlorine gas to make it more appealing to consumers. The glycemic index for white flour is very high meaning it spikes your insulin levels without providing nutritional fuel. Carbohydrates are converted to sugars by your body, so excessive products that contain white flour can lead to increased insulin resistance. Simple sugars (like refined carbohydrates) are the preferred fuel source for cancer.
